The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is charged with protecting and promoting the interests of American workers and their dependents.

Complaint jurisdiction:

Administers laws and programs protecting the safety and health, employment opportunities, and pension rights of workers; enforces federal wage, hour, and child labor laws; administers workers' compensation benefits for federal employees, longshore and harbor workers, and victims of black lung disease; works toward the removal of discriminatory employment practices by government contractors; sponsors job training activities; promotes peaceful and sound labor-management relations; guides the nation's unemployment insurance system; compiles statistics relative to employment and economic activity.

Complaints about unpaid wages, minimum wage enforcement, child labor laws, workers' compensation insurance, working conditions, farm labor contracts.

Complaints outside jurisdiction:

Independent contractors, state, county, or city employees must contact their own union office. Discrimination issues should be referred to State Department of Fair Employment and Housing.
