The California Department of Health Services is responsible for protecting California's citizens from unsafe adulterated, misbranded, or falsely advertised foods, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, and certain other consumer products.

The Department investigates purity, quality, safety, labeling for foods, drugs, drinking water, bottled water, wholesale warehousing prices, expiration date on products, processed, canned, packaged foods,

natural herb food claims, medical devices. Inspects companies that manufacture in California.

The Food and Drug Branch licenses and registers manufacturers and distributors of foods, drugs, medical devices; inspects cosmetics and hazardous household products, investigates health frauds, monitors

processed foods for pesticides, other chemical contaminants and microbiological problems. Handles complaints about California produced food, medical devices, drugs, and hazardous household products.
