FEDERAL

The Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) supports state and local governments in emergency planning, preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery responsibilities in peacetime and wartime. FEMA provides funding, technical assistance, supplies, equipment and training to state and local governments when major disasters are beyond their resources. Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, nuclear power plant accidents, dam safety, radiological and hazardous materials incidents and strategic nuclear attack are a few of the areas in which FEMA assists.

Processing center for the NFIP. Processes flood insurance claims, endorsements, cancellations, etc. nationwide.


The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)Provides consumers with referrals to flood insurance agents in their area. Consumers may order flood insurance forms and literature which is available at no charge.

STATE

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (OES) statutorily created by and directly under the Office of the Governor, coordinates overall state agency response to major disasters in support of local government. OES is responsible for assuring the state's readiness to respond to and recover from natural, manmade, and war-caused emergencies, and for assisting local government in their emergency preparedness, response and recovery efforts.


OES helps local governments assess disaster damages and set up Disaster Application Centers; maintains the State Emergency Plan and 24-hour toll-free toxic release Hot-line; relays toxic spill reports to state/federal response and regulatory agencies; coordinates search and rescue missions for individuals lost in the wilderness.

HUMANITARIAN RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS

The American Red Cross, created in 1905 by Congressional Charter, is a volunteer humanitarian organization which provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.


They provide food, clothing, medical help, temporary shelter and financial help to victims of disaster to repair homes and buy essentials. Locates family members missing in other countries as a result of war, civil crisis or disaster. Provides information, referral and financial aid to members of the U.S. armed forces and their families. Ensures a safe blood supply and collects, processes and distributes half the nation's blood supply.
