The California Department of Consumer Affairs, Dental Board of California (DBC), regulates and licenses Dentists and Registered Dental Assistants (RDAs). The Dental Hygiene Board of California (DHC) administers exams and licenses.

The DBC does not issue specialty licenses; however, it regulates dentists who specialize in orthodontics, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Registered Dental Hygienist and Registered Dental Assistants must take a course approved by the Dental Hygiene Board to take dental x-rays; they cannot operate an x-ray machine unless licensed to do so.

Dental Insurance complaints or inquiries should be directed to California Department of Corporations, HMO Help Center at (800) 400-0815.

Dental Labs are not regulated by any state or federal agency at this time. Complaints may be directed to the local district attorney or handled as a civil matter.
