CONSERVATION go back

The California Department of Conservation assures the wise use of California's mineral, geothermal, petroleum, and soil resources, and administers the state's Beverage Container Recycling Program. This department also administers the California Land Conservation (Williamson) Act which encourages maintaining agricultural and open space status. This program provides financial incentives to private owners to provide open-space lands for hiking, camping, and fishing. Protection of natural habitats for animals, soil conservation, safe underground and surface water are among this department's responsibilities. Complaint responsibility includes areas listed below.

Home energy conservation, mining claims

The Division of Mines and Geology serves as California's geological surveyor, identifies geological seismic hazards and their underlying causes, regulates all mined lands reclamation and the conservation. Wise use of mineral resources is regulated by the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act.

(916-322-1082)

The Division of Oil, Geothermal Resources, and Gas supervises the drilling, operations, maintenance, and abandonment of oil, gas, and geothermal wells to assure responsible use of these resources and to prevent contamination and damage from drilling operations. It monitors repressuring operations to reduce land instability over or adjacent to oil, gas, or geothermal reservoirs. The division also collects and publishes statistics of oil, gas, and geothermal well drilling and production; maintains maps; and produces technical reports.

(916-323-1777)

The Division of land Resource Protection administers the Williamson Act, which reimburses cities and counties for tax revenue losses resulting from reduced assessment of lands restricted to agricultural and open space purposes. These lands are assessed on income produced rather than market value. It provides comprehensive maps of farmlands, grazing lands, and urban areas in 40 of California's major agricultural counties, and administers the state's Soil Conservation Program.

(916-324-0850)

The Division of Recycling administers the California Beverage container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act, a program providing for large-scale recycling of beverage containers through financial incentives and convenient, economical redemption sources for all consumers in the state.
