CIVIL RIGHTS go back


The term "civil rights" may be defined as the rights, privileges, and immunities guaranteed to all citizens of the United States by the 13th and 14th Amendments to the US Constitution and by certain acts of Congress. Several agencies which assist individuals with civil rights are listed below.


The California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General takes direct actions on behalf of persons whose civil rights have been violated or denied; enforces various state laws protecting civil rights, including discrimination of the disabled in public accommodation.

The US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division on Americans With Disabilities Act is a Federal agency with jurisdiction over all states relative to civil rights for disabled Americans.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization which investigates discrimination, harassment, or violation of rights of the elderly, minors, and minorities, gender-based or racial issues, sexual orientation issues to protect individual liberties.

The California Department of Rehabilitation Enforces the American Disabilities Act, providing civil rights for persons with disabilities relative to employment, public sector services, private sector services, and telecommunications.
