Checks Systems For Financial Institutions (CHEX)
CHEX Systems provides information to financial institutions such as state and federal banks, savings and loan companies, and credit unions about consumer checking accounts and credit history. The financial institution may refuse a consumer its services based on the information provided by CHEX Systems. A bank may report a consumer to CHEX Systems when the banks decides to close a consumer's account if the bank customer consistently has insufficient funds or overdrafts.
If a consumer is reported by a banking or lending institution, the report is active in the CHEX Systems for seven years. If the information is incorrect, the consumer must request that the financial institution in question remove the report. If the bank (or other institution) refuses to cooperate, the consumer can contact the California Department of Business Oversight which has jurisdiction over CHEX Systems.
CHEX Systems and SCAN are owned by Deluxe Check Printers; these companies print the checks used by consumers for banking purposes.
Contact the CHEX Systems, Inc. to check files on record, a consumer should send written request with full name, social security number, birth date, California driver's license, and provide addresses for the past five years. The correspondence you receive from ChexSystems will include a toll-free telephone number that provides an option to speak with a Consumer Relations representative.
