Under the jurisdiction of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the County Weights and Measures office enforces the Business and Professions Code for weights and measures in each county of California. Jurisdiction encompasses any commercial transaction requiring weighing, measuring, or counting. Inspectors monitor the contents of over 30,000 packages every year at the retail and wholesale levels. These packages contain all kinds of products such as pork chops, cereal, pet food, dish soap, and car wax. If a packaged product says "12 ounces", the contents of that package must be 12 ounces. When the contents are not labeled, inspectors remove the product from shelves until the problem is resolved. County Weights and Measures Offices are responsible for inspecting scales, labeling, quantity and packaging of items sold in marketplace. Inspections include any package sold by weight, count, or measure; inspects over 4500 gasoline pumps and meters at gas stations to guarantee fair charges; monitors taxi and bus mileage meters which must have official "seal". Inspects over 2000 scales in markets, delicatessens, candy stores, and hardware stores each year for compliance.

Air and water hoses are required at gas stations per Business and Professions Code Section 1365.0, Chapter 14.5. Enforcement is through the District Attorney, City Attorney, or Attorney General.
