Statistics for births, deaths, and marriages are kept by both the county and the state. Divorce records are available through Superior Court in the county where the divorce was filed; the County Clerk Recorder's Office does not maintain records on divorces. Consumers can find county government contact numbers in the government listings of their White Pages phone directories.

Statistical records can be ordered from the Department of Health Services, Office of Vital Records by anyone who can provide sufficient identification. However, county records may be confidential and available only to the subject of the record or by court order. Confidentiality policies differ by county.

This office maintains a permanent public record of each birth, death, arriage, (divorce records since 1962) occurring in California since 1905. Provides certified copies of California vital records or searches the permanent central registry to verify the occurrence of vital events in California. Directs and monitors functions of approximately 180 local offices which register vital events for uniform application of registration laws, policies, and procedures. For other records/statistics, consumer should contact county clerk of the county where the event occurred.
