The US Securities and Exchange Commission administers federal laws involving securities and finances to protect investigators and the public and advises the federal courts in corporate reorganization proceedings.


The commission is responsible for preventing fraud and deception in the purchase and sale of securities. The commission may obtain court orders to prohibit fraudulent activities, and may suspend or revoke the registration of brokers, dealers, and investment companies or advisors who operate fraudulently.


The Commission regulates the purchase and sale of securities and assets by companies in electric and gas utility holding company systems.
