Consumers are often confused as to why sales tax is higher in one county than another.
The basic state tax rate is 7.25% with some districts adding voter approved special taxing jurisdictions or district taxes. Voter approved special taxing often provides revenue for additional city or county projects such as libraries, transit projects, stadiums, etc. For additional explanation, consumers may contact the California Board of Equalization.
