Moving companies operating within the state of California are under the jurisdiction of the California Public Utilities Commission.


Moving companies operating within California are assigned an "authority number" to operate. Consumer complaints may be filed with the Headquarter's office.

FMCSA develops, maintains, and enforces federal regulations that promote carrier safety, industry productivity, and new technologies. FMCSR (regulations) establish safe operating requirements for commercial vehicle drivers, carriers, vehicles, and vehicle equipment. Their primary mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.



Moving companies whose trucks cross state lines (interstate) must register for a USDOT number, and if permanently based in California, must be assigned "authority number" by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).



Complaints:

Complaints are no longer resolved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Complaints will be kept on file for informational purposes only. Consumers need to address disputes through the Better Business Bureau or through civil remedies.



It is mandatory for interstate movers to participate in a plan, which provides for the resolution of loss and damage disputes by independent third-party arbitrators. Individuals are encouraged to seek legal action if they cannot resolve service charges and claim problems.
