The California Department of Consumer Affairs, Medical Board of California, is responsible for the licensure and/or regulation of physicians and surgeons (MDs) and other closely related healing arts practitioners including the following:
Acupuncturists, audiologists, hearing aid dispensers, physical therapists, physician assistants, podiatrists, psychologists, respiratory care practitioners, speech-language pathologists, and registered dispensing opticians, research psychoanalysts, medical assistants, and licensed midwives. Osteopathic Physicians (DOs) are regulated by the Board of Osteopathic Examiners.
The Board's Central Complaint Unit processes complaints about any of these professions. It initiates investigations of complaints and, if necessary, submits cases to the Attorney General's Office for legal action.
Complaint jurisdiction:
- Negligence, incompetence, misrepresentation, or unlicensed practice
- Excessive prescribing or administering of drugs or treatment
- Furnishing drugs to addicts
- Prescribing dangerous drugs without a prior medical examination
- Attending a patient while intoxicated
- Being convicted or involved with narcotics or drug violations or other substantially related crimes
- Mental illness
- Sexual misconduct with a patient
Complaints outside jurisdiction:
- Ethical matters
- Fee disputes (societies)
