Acting under the US Department of Homeland Security, the US Coast Guard is the primary federal agency with maritime authority for the U.S. The Coast Guard's four main missions are maritime law enforcement, maritime safety, environmental protection, and national security.

The Coast Guard assists by:

  • Improving boating safety, reducing the risk of personal injury and property damage.
  • Helping develop national and international pollution response plans.
  • Its maritime law enforcement provides jurisdiction over drug smugglers and illegal migrants.
  • Enforcing standards and policies for safe design, construction, operation of commercial vessels.
  • Enforcing fisheries regulations.
  • Managing port safety, port security and environmental protection concerns.
  • Rendering aid to people in distress and their property in the marine environment.
  • Assisting in oil or hazardous chemical spills.
