Under the California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, the Registry of Charitable Trusts monitors, audits, and registers charitable (public benefit) organizations to determine whether the assets they hold for the public benefit are properly administered. The files and annual financial reports of 58,000 registered charitable nonprofit organizations are available for public inspection. The office also oversees some 20,000 additional hospitals, educational institutions and religious organizations not required to register.
