Blood banks accept donations of blood from members of the community to be used in hospitals or to be made available for instances of national disaster recovery. Blood donations made to the American Red Cross are used nationwide and in other countries. The American Red Cross collects one-half the total amount of blood donated in the United States.


The Sacramento Blood Bank falls under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration and Department of Health Services (Laboratory Field Services).
