The California State Bar (BAR) examines and licenses attorneys (lawyers) and is part of the attorney disciplinary system of the California Supreme Court which processes complaints involving attorney misconduct.
If warranted, the Bar holds hearings and may issue reprisals to attorneys or recommend suspension or disbarment of attorneys found guilty of serious misconduct. The Bar also sets standards for and conducts attorney-client fee arbitration in counties that do not have a local Bar association.
Complaints jurisdiction:
License attorneys, takes complaints, and provides arbitration of fee disputes. Unlicensed attorneys are not under the Bar's jurisdiction.
Complaints outside jurisdiction:
Judges, court clerks, other court personnel, particular laws the consumer believes unfair, requests for attorney referral, or advice about a particular legal problem.
