Automobile dealers are required to keep records showing mileage statements for vehicles and must make them available for a consumer. Disconnecting or resetting the odometer with the intent to change the mileage or false representation of the vehicle's mileage to defraud any person of the monetary value of a vehicle is against the law.

Contact the Bureau of Investigations, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) , for additional information or assistance. (Vehicle Code, Division 12, Article 10, Odometer Sections 28050 through 28053.)
