As of January 1, 1992, all repair shops servicing auto air conditioning systems must use either refrigerant recovery/recycle equipment or recovery only equipment approved by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Technicians who repair or service auto air conditioning services must be trained and certified by an EPA approved organization.
