Created in 1982, the Acupuncture Committee (AC), now the Acupuncture Board (AB) is the state agency under the Department of Consumer Affairs and the Medical Board of California, which licenses and regulates acupuncturists in California.
Between 1975 and 1982 acupuncturists were licensed by the MBC's Division of Allied Health Professions. The primary responsibility of the AB is to protect consumers from incompetent and fraudulent acupuncturists through the enforcement of the Acupuncture Licensure Act (Business and Professions Code Section 4925 through 4979) and the AB's regulations (California Code of Regulations, Title 16, beginning with Section 1399.400). The AB also strives to promote safe practice through the improvement of educational training standards, continuing education, and disciplinary action.
