Under the California Department of Consumer Affairs, the Board of Registered Nursing examines and licenses registered nurses (RNs) and issues certificates to clinical nurse specialist, qualified nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, and public health nurses.
The Board's primary role is consumer protection, and it takes disciplinary action against unsafe or incompetent RNs. Additionally, the Board approves schools of nursing, promotes nursing education, and approves and reviews curricula for these schools. It also approves all continuing education providers. Board nurse consultants analyze current nursing continuing education providers as well as current nursing practice issues.
Complaint jurisdiction:
Unlicensed activity; gross negligence or incompetence; drug offenses; unprofessional conduct; conviction of a felony or crime substantially related to registered nursing; continuing education of registered nurses; license application fraud, misrepresentation.
Complaints Outside Jurisdiction:
Personnel or staffing problems at a health facility; fee disputes or dishonored checks; licensed vocational nurses, psychiatric technicians, nursing assistants, physician assistants, respiratory therapists.
BRN's Headquearter's office gives the exams and licenses, provides lists of all approved nursing school programs in California, complaint forms, and a brochures explaining the Diversion Program for impaired nurses.
