The United States Food and Drug Administration is responsible for ensuring that food, cosmetics, medicine, medical devices, and radiation-emitting products are safe for consumer consumption or use. The safety and wholesomeness of food, as well as safe levels of pesticide residues, are subject to FDA standards. The FDA also routinely examines blood bank operations to ensure the purity of the nation's blood supply. The purity and effectiveness of biologicals (medical preparations made from living organisms and their products), such as insulin and vaccines, are also regulated.

Complaints can be sent to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and from there the complaints will be referred to the appropriate state.

Complaint jurisdiction:

Misbranded, adulterated, or accidental injurious consumer products in foods, (except meat and poultry) drugs, new drugs, cosmetics, medical and radiological devices, animal feed and medications, biologics (vaccines, blood plasma), and radiological health (microwave ovens, color TVs).

Complaints outside jurisdiction:

False advertising, restaurant sanitation, poisoning, illegal sale of narcotics or drugs, dispensing practices of pharmacists, drug prices, unsolicited products received by mail, refunds, or exchanges.

The Los Angeles' Food and Drug Branch licenses and registers manufacturers and distributors of foods, drugs, medical devices; inspects cosmetics and hazardous household products, investigates health frauds, monitors processed foods for pesticides, other chemical contaminants and microbiological problems. The California Department of Alcohol and Drug Program (ADP) is a state agency that assists the public by coordinating services with county health departments to prevent alcohol and drug abuse.

They provide information on alcohol and drug abuse recovery programs or regulations of residential and non-residential alcohol drug programs. Verification of licensure is available upon phone inquiry.
