Under the California Department of Health Services, the Office of the State Registrar collects and maintains data of vital statistics on births, deaths, marriages, and marriage dissolution's for use by public and private organizations as well as the California Department of Health Services and other agencies. This data is used in medical and social sciences, public health and health demographics, human services planning, population estimation and projections, and economic forecasting.
The California Department of Health Services, Office of Vital Records directs and monitors functions of approximately 180 local offices which register vital events for uniform application of registration laws, policies, and procedures.
They maintain permanent public records of each birth, death, marriage, and divorce (marriage dissolution's since 1962) occurring in California since 1905. They will provide certified copies of California vital records or searches the permanent central registry to verify the occurrence of vital events in California.
